Microsoft's Big Tease

The epic failure of iPhone 4 has left gadget freaks wallowing in the depths of despair. But in the bowls of their depraved darkness lies a faint glimmer of hope: the long awaited Microsoft Windows 7 Phone edition. Ok, so the "edition" part was my doing. Nevertheless, gizmo gurus will have plenty to be thankful for this holiday season as the Windows 7 phone promises to integrate the only good thing about its short lived, ill fated Kin processor and the Zune's wireless synching capabilities.

But wait, there's more. Microsoft says that you won't just be able to synch music wirelessly; you'll also be able to instantly publish pictures and OneNote files onto a free website made especially for Windows 7 phone users. The folks at Wired are making several other astute observations about Microsoft's massive PR announcements today. Reporter Brian Chen notes that Microsoft's proposal to allow people to track a lost phone and delete its sensitive contents from the privacy of their own homes, for free, is a dig straight into Apple's ribs. Of course, this is unlikey to deter Apple loyalists because they seem to enjoy paying extra for stuff. Maybe it makes them feel important. Psychology aside, streaming media is the name of the tech game these days, and Chen is quick to point out that Apple lags far behind in this respect. Chen rightly opines that Microsoft clearly wants to take a juicy bite out of that giant piece of fruit, which is inexplicably No. 2 in the smart phone department, although recent stats are nowhere to be found.

Microsoft is undoubtedly aware of yesterday's Consumer Reports massacre, which Apple seems determined to deny, deny, deny. Still, Microsoft's prospects are uncertain, as cell phone sales aren't particularly strong during the Christmas season. Right now, Microsoft is taking a beating on behalf of Google's Droid, which has been nipping at the iPhone's heels since its release. As such, Microsoft's big push might be too little, too late as consumers have already pledged allegiance to another manufacturer by the time sleigh bells are ringing. Only time will tell.......
