What is Brotips and Why Did Mark Cuban Invest a Billion Dollars in It?

Earlier this week, tech and investment blogs alike reported that Mark Cuban, owner of entities such as the Dallas Mavericks, Landmark Theatres, and Magnolia Pictures among others, invested in Brotips, a blog site that's "Redefining the bro, one tip at a time." The guys behind Brotips publishes bite-sized words of wisdom that boys can use to improve their lives. The site is very easy on the eyes-it's tiled with these brief and easy-to-digest tips, and each one can easily be shared with a single click.

So how much is Cuban putting in the company? He emailed FastCompnay and said he invested One Billion Dollars and Seventeen Cents. Nah, he was just kidding (I think). The Financial Post reported that the deal was for an undisclosed sum of money, though Mossab Basir told the publication that the investment was less than $10 million.

How Brotips Came to Be

According to FastCompany, Brotips started all because of girl. Apparently, a student from Emory University was venting out his girl frustrations on Facebook, and people started talking and replying to his post. Dominique Barfield weighed in by saying, "There's a 99% chance that you're awesome. Act like it." That line spread like wildfire, and within 12 hours, 140,000 people had repeated the line on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. It was then that Barfield and his friend got the idea of launching a Tumblr site and started publishing more tips for men. Pretty soon, they launched a Facebook and Twitter page to spread the "bromance," and well, the rest is history.

Currently, the company has over 400,000 Twitter followers, 300,000+ Tumblr users, and 269,000 Facebook likes. Not to mention, the site receives 2.5 million monthly visitors.

How did Mark Cuban become an investor? Well, it was pretty straight-forward. Basir sent Cuban and email about Brotips + a quick sales pitch, Cuban responded, and they started negotiating until they found a common ground that made all parties happy. Cuban expressed his excitement and told FastCompany, "I think it is riding a cultural wave that is very leverageable on multiple platforms... The guys have really captured a huge fan base and they have significant and multiple revenue opps."

"What kind of tips do they have? Can bros really use them?"

To answer the second question, from a girl's perspective, YES. In fact, nearly half of Brotips' traffic comprise of females, and that's because women want men to know the stuff that Brotips publishes. The site dishes out advice about various topics that bros ponder on, including girls (of course), fellow bros, work, and social media.

Check out some of the Brotips that made it to my list of top 5 Brotips:

Brotip #1375: the "oh, i totally texted you. did you not get it?" lie will only work so many times.

Brotip #5: if you feel smugly superior because you've been on tumblr since before it was promoted, you should probably find a hobby.

Brotip #174: you can kick ass, or you can make excuses. you can't do both.

Bro tip #194: it's okay to have an opinion, but that doesn't mean you have to be a dick about it.

Brotiop #1378: the amount of facebook likes you get doesn't indicate how many friends you have in real life.
