More than one billion scrap tires are generated annually, worldwide, and it is estimated that four billion unwanted scrap tires exist in landfills and stockpiles. Scrap tires are generated at about the rate of one per person in the U.S., or about 300 million per year. The improper disposal of these tires can be a threat to our environment. Across our nation, efforts are ongoing to clean up abandoned tire piles. By recycling scrap tires, new piles can be prevented.
