Dr. Mark Russ received his BA with High Honors in Biology in 1976 from Haverford College and his MD from Drexel University College of Medicine in 1980 with Academic Distinction in Mental Health Sciences. Dr. Russ completed his internship, residency, and chief residency in Psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1984. Dr. Russ joined the faculty of NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health Center in 1984, where he assumed positions of increasing clinical and administrative responsibility, directing a brief inpatient treatment residency training unit, and the Evaluation Center. Dr. Russ moved to the Zucker Hillside Hospital/North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in 1996 where he was the Director of Acute Care Psychiatry until his return to NewYork-Presbyterian Westchester Behavioral Health Center in 2014 to assume his current role. At the Zucker Hillside Hospital, Dr. Russ was the director of inpatient and emergency services for most of his eighteen year tenure, and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. He was also director of the Advanced Clinical Experience in Psychiatry at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School the of Medicine.Dr. Russ' academic interests have included exploring the neurobiological underpinnings of self-injurious behavior in patients with borderline personality disorder, assessment of suicide risk, aggressive behavior in psychiatric inpatients, and the effectiveness of court mandated treatment. He has taught and mentored psychiatric trainees throughout his career, and has received several teaching awards, including the American Psychiatric Association's Annual Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents. Dr. Russ has had a practice of general adult psychiatry since 1984.
