This damaged standpipe has allowed leaves and debris to enter and is now clogged. As a result, water flowing through the downspout will not be able to properly flow into the storm sewer. This condition is forcing a large amount of water to flow against the foundation wall which is causing water intrusion to occur in the basement.

This is a great time of year to have your attic checked for moisture intrusion. Snow and ice can cause damage to roof members and cause leaks. The heavy spring time rains can also show evidence of failed roofing members.

Asbestos-containing materials that aren?t damaged or disturbed are not likely to pose a health risk. Usually the best thing is to leave asbestos-containing material alone if it is in good condition. One of the worst things that you can do is remove the asbestos yourself (unless properly trained). In this photo, the homeowner attempted to remove the asbestos containing material from the duct work in the home. By doing this, a potential health hazard was turned into an ACTIVE health hazard.

At a minimum, wood used on the exterior should be 6 inches above ground level. This photo illustrates that point.

This roof was in poor condition as the asphalt shingles were crumbling. The second layer was an asbestos shingle which will add to the cost of the roof replacement. This is very useful information for the prospective buyer of the home.

With an overhanging tree branch nearby, this damaged area of soffit and siding was likely the entry point for unwanted guests (and water). Home maintenance is key in preventing minor issues from becoming larger. Much larger.

You never know what will be found when removing the dead front to a service panel. This service panel, however, was very clean and well constructed.

Cracks within the framing components can be easily missed by the untrained eye.

This receptacle shows signs of previous arcing which raises a major safety concern.

As an inspector, I choose to recommend a service panel replacement when I come across Federal Pacific Stab-Lok service panels.

Heating cables are often installed in areas of a roof where ice dams are most prevalent. Heating cables do not prevent ice dams from occurring, but they can help reduce the damage done when they form. To help prevent ice dams, it is best to go to the source of the problem and address issues related to insulation and ventilation.

Never assume that electrical wiring is no longer in use just because it is cut. This was an exposed live wire hanging from the ceiling. Very dangerous!

Poor ventilation in the attic creates a condition which is conducive to mold growth.
