The 2021 GMC Canyon has a similar identity to the Chevrolet Colorado. But the line-up has struggled a lot to create its own identity in the midsize truck segment. Pointcom Rating: 7.7 / 10

The 2021 GMC Canyon is basically the more glamorous version of the Chevrolet Colorado. This is even though they are very identical underneath the surface. The midsize pickup trucks are trendy. But they are now facing more competition from rivals such as the Jeep Gladiator and the Ford Ranger. Unlike all the other trucks in this segment, the company markets the 2021 GMC Canyon premium pickup. This is even though the top-of-the-line model failed to meet those expectations. But the 2021 GMC Canyon can be fitted with fancy features such as cooled and heated seats and filled with chrome. It is also present with a trio of engines with a torque-rich diesel engine and a robust V6. As with Colorado, the 2021 GMC Canyon gives athletic handling and a refined ride for a midsize truck that is not based on any crossover. This helps it to imitate full-size trucks such as the GMC Sierra 1500. It can do this with its great hauling and towing abilities.

Interior Build

The 2021 GMC Canyon has an interior design low on flash and high on function. It has an upright instrument panel layout and simple controls to read and reach. But the center console is cluttered with a jumbo shifter. There are plastic toggle switches for the accessory equipment on the center stack, accessible and handy. Still, they feel cheap in the pricier trim levels as with the top trim. Therein lies the top complaint about the interior of the 2021 GMC Canyon. It does not feel like a luxurious environment, even in the top trim. But the front seats are very spacious.

Utility

The top trim makes the 2021 GMC Canyon one of the costlier midsize trucks on the market. It is not worth the extra price over a mechanically identical and well-equipped Chevrolet Colorado for all but the most comfort-obsessed consumers. With the top model of the 2021 GMC Canyon, all you get is an image, a badge, and a little extra cushion, not a car with greater capabilities. But the 2021 GMC Canyon comes with five years of roadside assistance and complimentary service visits. A powertrain warranty of five years is usual for this segment.

Technological Changes

The infotainment system of the 2021 GMC Canyon is feature-rich and easy to use. It has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The optional Bose system is also a nice update, but the volume does not get as high as you would like. There are a couple of USB ports for charging devices found in the front and back. The Wi-Fi hotspot of the 2021 GMC Canyon is also one of the simpler systems to use as it gives a 4G LTE connection and can tackle more than six devices. The lane departure warning and the forward collision alert are optional and sensitive, but they function as advertised. Otherwise, we want to see the inclusion of blind-spot monitoring on the feature list.

Driving Experience

The 2021 GMC Canyon comes with a V6 engine on the top trim. It gives great thrust and pulls with authority. The car reached sixty miles per hour in under seven seconds, which is rapid for a midsize truck. It also brakes and steers with great composure and precision, and the car-like handling is one of the strengths of the 2021 GMC Canyon. The 2021 GMC Canyon can also mix it up when driving off-road. There is good articulation and multi-speed transfer case standard on the all-wheel-drive models. Still, you will have to remove the low-hanging chin spoiler before that.

Comfort Factor

The 2021 GMC Canyon is a pickup from the outside, but the cabin features and comfort are far from what the basic pickup gives. The trim seats of the top model provide great comfort on long drives despite the backrests being firm and not giving a lot of lateral support. The rear seats are quite upright and flat. Adults will not be able to sit there for long periods.

Conclusion

The 2021 GMC Canyon is a different type of midsize pickup truck. Although quite capable, it is not as focused on the off-road adventure as on-road comfort and trailering. The car has great infotainment tech, a smooth multi-speed transmission, a punchy V6 engine, and a civilized cabin. These features make the 2021 GMC Canyon stand out from its rivals in the class.
